Making a difference with Mencap
24 March 2017
Our three-year partnership with Mencap, the UK’s leading learning disability charity, has left a lasting legacy in terms of raising funds, increasing awareness and creating meaningful opportunities across the country.
Since the partnership launched in 2014 we’ve raised a whopping £341,000 for Mencap through a whole host of events and initiatives. The Step Up Challenge, a yearly event which saw us walk, climb and crawl up 37 floors of our 20 Fenchurch Street Building, raised £73,406.
Group-wide fundraising days also proved hugely popular, with quizzes, auctions and raffles raising £18,000 in one day alone.
Creating job opportunities was also a hugely important part of the partnership. Mencap clients have completed 49 work placements with Land Securities through our Community Employment Programme, with a further 25 securing long-term employment.
Vicky Hiles is a shining example of this programme in action. Her learning disability had been a barrier to finding a job but, through our partnership Vicky took on a work placement at Leeds Trinity shopping centre, where she excelled. She’s now a permanent and highly valued member of the Trinity Leeds team.
Raising awareness about what it actually means to live with a learning disability has been another valuable aspect of the Mencap partnership. Over 300 employees have received ‘Learning Disability Awareness’ training, helping our centres break down barriers and improve customer service.
Our fundraising also helped support Mencap’s Young Ambassadors, teenagers with a learning disability who use their talent, enthusiasm and life experiences to demonstrate the positive impact they bring.
Diana Breeze, HR Director, said: “Our three-year partnership with Mencap has left a big impression on us as a business. Not only have our employees enjoyed meeting Mencap’s clients and learned a great deal about the challenges faced by people with learning difficulties, it has also given them the opportunity to develop their professional skills. It’s been a win-win.”
